I have been a police officer for thirteen years, and have consistantly trained in different styles of martial arts for the last twenty six years. Krav Maga incorporates training particularly relavent to law enforcement: low light conditions, ambush scenarios where you have to fight from a position of disadvantage, engaging unarmed opponents who suddenly arm themselves causing you to reassess the threat, and extracting yourself from multiple opponents to a position of advantage. If you want to get in the best shape of your life and learn the best self defense system in the world, then Salem Krav Maga is for you. I have been a runner and triathlete for a long time. I have done a lot of marathons and triathlons, including 4 Ironmans. This year, I was looking to change things up a bit and gain some upper body strength. I thought of cross-fit, but anyone can just lift weights. I remembered reading an article about Krav Maga years ago so I figured I would give it a try. After my first class I was hooked.
I am a 44 year old woman (pretty clumsy and uncoordinated) and it took some courage for me to walk into the class for the first time. I had no clue what to expect. Lee was the instructor that day, and he and everyone in the class made me feel welcome. I didn’t even know how to make a fist (shouldn’t everyone know how to do that??). I left the class and wasn’t sure if it was going to be “enough” of a workout. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
I have been a member for six weeks and am amazed at the gains in strength I have made in that short of time. Because the moves use your whole body, everything gets stronger. It is an incredible cardio workout. My upper body is getting much stronger, my coordination is getting better, and I am learning how to defend myself. Because of things that have happened to me in the past, my first instinct when someone puts their hands on me is to freeze. I am learning to get over that and learning how to fight back.
Lee and Kevin are great instructors. I have tremendous respect for what they do. They are both experts at Krav, but most importantly they know how to teach it correctly. They will show you as many times as necessary until you “get” it. Not everyone has the patience to do that, and do it well.
Krav Maga really has it all. It is a great stress reliever, a great cardio workout, it works all your muscles, gives you more self confidence, and it teaches you a ton of self defense techniques that are applicable in real life. While I find that I work hard during class, I always have fun and get in a few laughs. I encourage everyone to try it out. It is the best investment you could ever make in yourself.

I have been a police officer for over ten years. The effectiveness of Krav Maga in my experience has ranged from a 6 on 1 bar melee’ to restaining a psych patient without injuring myself or the patient. In law enforcement solutions are rarely simple, but the solution to self defense and fitness is simply Krav Maga.

After a trying year of health issues, I needed to find a way to get back in shape. The auto-immune disorder I was diagnosed with limited my exercise options (running and weight lifting were now considered no-no’s) but my doctor recommended aerobics and even martial arts. Having studied martial arts in my youth (I have a background in Tae Kwon Do and Kung Fu) I wanted to seek out something that would give me the aerobic exercise that I needed as well as the fun I had studying years ago.
Then I found the Salem Self Defense Center and their Krav Maga program. In a word – WOW.
I met with the lead instructor Lee and told him my situation and to my surprise, he was familiar with my auto-immune issue. He gave me his honest opinion on how it would help me and I gave it a whirl.
My first thought after the first class was how different this was from my traditional martial arts study. No ranking is worn by anyone – either around their waist or in their attitude. You couldn’t tell if a person was there for 4 days or 4 years based on how helpful everyone was. No slow-moving forms (katas) – it was an incredible aerobic workout. You also learn something new every class and leave there a stronger person physically and mentally than when you got there an hour ago. I honestly can’t believe how great I feel when I leave!
A big part of this comes from Kevin and Lee – I have found them to be not just excellent martial artists but amazing teachers. The classroom environment they have developed – one free of ego and attitude – is perfect for a person to learn in. They are patient with you and they understand every movement of every technique so you can perfect it. My only regret is that I did not find this sooner!
If you are looking for a great workout, practical self-defense, and a great time and want to learn from some amazing teachers – this is the place to be!

My experience of two years at SDC has gone beyond learning Krav Maga.
